Alters Attract Spirits
New Orleans, 2009
I share the story of the spirit in my stereo
With the Voo-doo priest
With warm brown eyes and a blond streak in his long hair
If he had beautiful teeth,
I’d perhaps sleep with him
But he does not
So instead I sit on the floor of his shop
With my feet tucked up
And we chat as old friends
“You may want to create an alter in your car,” he suggests
to appease the sprit there
“My car is an alter,” comes from my lips
although I had never thought of it as such
But its sacred objects are arranged in a way that celebrates
And it feels fully protected
“Well, that’s why you have spirit there.
Alters always attract spirit.”
MMMM. I had not thought of that. I like that.

Voo-doo Advice
I stop by several times to chat with him
As he’s my age my age with a blond streak in his hair
“I’ve run all the way to see you,” says the thin runner
with her ipod still hanging
as she walks into the voo-doo shop
She’s the first person with an ipod I’ve seen here in this city of music
“Hmm, well he’s yours then.
I only walked to see him” I say
and we all laugh
I leave the shop.
