Knocking down Walls
Black Rock City (Burning Man), 2007

Picture
Under a full moon eclipse
In the desert
Light falls into dark
Then light slowly gains its hold
On the countless souls
Moving about within themselves

Music pulses through my empty insides
As I dance
At this desert burn
In the fecundity of burning man

Dancing on an art car
Designed to bounce gently beneath our weight
We drive across the desert
Music so loud
Sometimes I drift out of my body
And look down
On my sister and I
Dancing like goddesses in the night

Art car slows for an old couple
I glance and put them in their 80’s
He helps her gently up
Onto the moving art car
When I look at her again

I see a wild goddess
Long white hair swinging around her
In the cool night air
She’s topless, her old breasts pulling to the earth
Both nipples elegantly pierced

I dance besides her
And my world is shattered

How does an 80 year old woman
Find herself dancing half-naked
On a bouncing art car in the desert?

Why do we limit ourselves so?
Why do we not explore just what our bodies are capable of living?
Why do we not explore the endless paths within our brilliant minds?
Why not knock down the walls of our own self-limitations?

Why live small
When anything is possible?
